The difference between a headshot and a portrait is subtle but meaningful even though both terms may be used interchangeably these days. Traditionally, headshots were very common in the performing arts industry. However, the permanent rising presence on social networks has brought more attention to having a faithful representation of each person through good photographs, either headshots or portraits, regardless of their profession or daily activity.
A headshot is a special kind of portrait photography with a very specific message in mind. From a composition viewpoint, it is generally a shot of the head with some of the shoulders in the frame. Its background can be solid, generally white, grey or semi-black, or a blurred surrounding. Its main purpose is to be engaging and convey the right message to the targeted audience and portray the personality and trademark of the individual.
As with headshots, portraits are mostly about capturing the personality of the person being photographed as well but a portrait tells a bigger story or is a part of a theme. Again, these shots can either have a simple background with the subject creating the majority of the interest, or they can have elaborate or blurred backgrounds to frame the subject. In a portrait, the composition may include 1/2, 3/4 or full body shots, and clothing and the surroundings maybe are an integral part of the story or message being communicated.
In a corporate portrait, there are few things that need to be clearly communicated in the shot: the professional activity of the person being photographed highlighted by its environment, emphasize professional success, power or social status.
In today's world that people have become more visual, it is paramount that everyone gets a professionally taken portrait or headshot for their virtual hangouts and social profiles.
